HDB kitchen makeover without hacking
A practical guide to refreshing sound kitchen surfaces while keeping the existing layout.

A kitchen refresh without replacing cabinets is possible when the existing structure and layout remain suitable. Wrapping changes the finish; damaged boards, leaks and layout problems still need separate decisions. Agree the surface scope and preparation before choosing colours.
Decide what you want to change
Separate appearance from function. If storage, layout and cabinet structure work well, a new finish may address the main issue. If plumbing, worktop support or cabinet boards are damaged, identify those repairs first.
Create a clear surface list
List door fronts, drawers, side panels, frames and any other areas in scope. Worktops and backsplashes need their own suitability assessment. Include close-up photographs of the sink and hob areas when asking for advice.
Build a small finish palette
Compare samples with the floor, wall colour and existing appliances. View the samples in daytime and evening light. Decide whether grain runs vertically or horizontally and how different surfaces meet.
Plan for an occupied home
Agree access, working hours, protection and temporary restrictions. The schedule depends on preparation, scope and access. Confirm it in writing before arranging your household around it.
Check the handover
Review the agreed surfaces, corners, edges and hardware with the installer. Keep the finish code, care instructions and warranty documents. Raise concerns while the job can be reviewed together.
A practical brief for an occupied kitchen
Start with a simple annotated photo: mark the surfaces you want to change and those that must remain. Include end panels and the sides of tall units, not just the doors. Identify appliances or hardware that could restrict access and ask who is responsible for moving or disconnecting anything.
- Before work: agree which cupboards need clearing and where materials can be placed.
- During work: confirm working hours, protection and whether cooking or sink use is restricted.
- Before handover: compare completed surfaces against the agreed list and check hardware operation.
- Afterwards: keep the finish codes, cleaning guidance and written warranty documents.
Do not interpret “without hacking” as a guarantee of zero preparation, disruption or dust. Ask what is needed for the actual cabinet condition. If the brief expands to structural, electrical or plumbing changes, reassess the scope with the appropriate professionals before proceeding.
