Kitchen cabinets: wrap, repaint or replace?
Choose an approach based on cabinet condition, the finish you want and the scope of work.

Wrapping is an appearance change for suitable existing cabinetry. Repainting changes the coating; replacement changes the cabinetry itself. The right choice starts with condition and layout—not a universal claim that one option is always cheaper or better.
First inspect the cabinet structure
Check for swelling, water damage, loose joints, failing hinges and an unsuitable layout. A surface makeover cannot fix those problems. Replacement or repair may be the better starting point when the underlying structure has failed.
When wrapping is worth considering
Wrapping suits a finish change on a stable, suitable substrate. It offers decorative textures such as wood grain and stone effects while keeping the existing structure. The shape, edges and condition still determine the preparation and suitability.
When repainting may fit
Painting offers colour flexibility but requires a compatible coating system and preparation for the existing finish. Ask the painter about adhesion, curing time, odour, touch-ups and how the kitchen can be used during the work.
When replacement earns its cost
Replacement lets you change the layout, storage and damaged structural components. Compare the complete scope, including removal, worktops, plumbing and electrical work where relevant. A cheaper surface treatment is not good value if it covers a problem that still needs fixing.
Compare written proposals
Use the same measurements and requirements for each supplier. Compare disruption, preparation, maintenance, finished edges, warranty and total scope alongside the price.
Compare the actual scope
| Approach | Useful starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Wrap | Keep sound cabinets and change the visible finish. | Substrate adhesion, edges, seams and film suitability. |
| Repaint | Keep the structure and change colour with a coating. | Preparation, coating compatibility, curing and touch-ups. |
| Replace | Change damaged units, layout or storage. | Removal, new carpentry, service connections and reinstatement. |
Request proposals against the same surface list. If a contractor identifies swollen boards or failing joints, separate the repair decision from the cosmetic finish. A new finish will not correct those structural problems.
For a fair comparison, also ask when the kitchen can be used again, what access is needed and who handles any plumbing or electrical work. These practical differences may matter more than the initial headline price.
